There are two types of safety glass utilized in the auto glass industry;
LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS FOR WINDSHIELDS
This consists of a double layer of glass, with a thin sheet of vinyl in between. Lamination occurs by applying heat and pressure to the three layers in an autoclave. Upon impact, the broken pieces adhere to the vinyl inner lining, allowing no penetration. Laminated safety glass makes "going through the windshield" virtually impossible.
The glass has been through a special process where it's heated, then quickly cooled. This makes the glass 5 to 10 times stronger than untempered, raw glass of the same thickness. Upon sudden impact, tempered safety glass simply disintegrates into dull-edged pebbles. With tempered safety glass there are no large, jagged pieces of glass to seriously or fatally injure the driver or passengers.
